Description

Description

This volume, dedicated to the memory of the historian Penelope Stathi (1947-2008), contains 29 works by her friends and colleagues.

The works are organized into five sections covering a wide thematic field. Among other things, issues related to the institutions of the Ottoman state and the Orthodox Church, the economic activities of Christians and Muslims during the Ottoman period, social life, the ideological and political use of history, and the relations between Christians and Muslims as well as between the Greek and Turkish states in the 19th and early 20th centuries are examined.

Aspects of early Greek and Arabic literature, the education and training of Greeks in the Ottoman Empire and the Greek state, as well as issues concerning theological literature, the image of the Greek Orthodox world in foreign travelers' accounts, and the religious life of Christians and Muslims with an emphasis on issues of religious heterogeneity are also explored.

Finally, a separate section is dedicated to Constantinople. This section presents a description of 17th-century Constantinople, the guild of furriers in the mid-18th century, the church of the Entrance of the Virgin Mary at Stavrodromi, the movement of Demoticism in the 19th and 20th centuries, and the consequences of the spread of national ideology on imperial Constantinople.
