The present collective volume is the result of the reflection provoked by the dual awareness that Greek Higher Education is at a crucial turning point and, simultaneously, that the interdisciplinary field formed by the cognitive subjects dealing with Education is, without suffering from any crisis of exemplarity, nevertheless experiencing an internationally significant phase of endogenous restructuring, creative turmoil, and readjustment to the rapidly changing conditions of the postmodern era.
Although it indirectly entails the character of a review of the historical trajectory of the Department of Primary Education at the University of the Aegean, the main and explicit orientation of our scientific 'harvest' concerns, on a general level, the critical reflection on the dynamics and limits of interdisciplinary osmosis, as well as on the hybrid forms that these take.
On a more specific level, it concerns a calm positioning regarding current developments related to: a) the scientific and artistic literacy of students, b) their initiation into the epistemological particularity of various cognitive disciplines, and of course c) the holistic investigation of the multidimensional relationship between school - society - state.
The point of interface between these three entities should, in our opinion, be none other than the cognitive, emotional, and psychological preparation of children and adolescents for the adoption and fruitful future exercise of citizenship in a fluid local, ethnically national, European, and global environment.
Key features of this environment are the continuous burdening of nature, the intensification of class and racial inequalities, the crisis of representative institutions, cultural diversity, the competition of memories and political identities, and the 'polytheism of values.'
