Description

And the three studies included in this volume concern the tense system of modern Greek, which they describe from the perspective of learning Greek as a foreign language. The study by Angeliki Psaltou-Joycey focuses on the so-called perfective tenses (present perfect, pluperfect, and future perfect). The study by Maria Tzeveleku examines the sequence of tenses in narratives of children attending minority schools in Thrace. The study by Anastasios Tsangalidis examines the temporal sequences in the hypothetical moods of modern Greek. It simultaneously offers a systematic and exhaustive classification of hypothetical moods, the need for which has long been felt by those who teach Greek as a foreign language. And all three studies compare Greek data with data from other languages.

All three studies present the interactions of tenses with the subsystems of grammatical aspects, Aktionsart, and modalities of modern Greek. All three studies present the difficulties faced by those who try to learn Greek as a foreign language and suggest useful exercises and activities for the effective teaching of relevant grammatical phenomena.

The book is of interest to both researchers of the Greek language (linguists, philologists, etc.) and teachers of Greek as a foreign language.
