In 1908, a letter from the great Tolstoy comes into the hands of the young Gandhi, in which the renowned author uniquely analyzes the terrible problem of violence and its causes, and proposes a way in which it could be eradicated.
A few years later, in 1931, seeing the flames of war approaching, Einstein sends a letter to Freud, whom he admires immensely for his work, and asks him to respond to the burning question: "Is there any way to free humankind from the terror of war?"
Freud eagerly responds to the request of the famous physicist and sends a lengthy letter in which he analyzes with incredible insight the psychology of humans and the forces that generate violence and war. In the end, he suggests specific steps to reduce violence in the world.
Reading these two correspondences today, between Gandhi-Tolstoy and Einstein-Freud, one is truly amazed at how relevant their ideas are today, as well as the ways they propose to address the problem.
