Audience Award Skroutz Book Awards 2025: Translated Literature Novel

Marla Lindberg decides to attend the reunion with her old classmates in the snowy Alps. But as soon as she arrives at the remote lodge, she realizes there is only one thing more dangerous than running away into the frozen night: not doing so...

Marla's memories are crystal clear: the strange message that lured her to an abandoned maternity clinic, the shadow that tried to kill her, the peculiar whistling cough of the psychopath during the fight to the death. After years of psychotherapy, Marla now knows that all these are false memories. Marla suffers from prosopagnosia, and her brain plays tricks on her under pressure, leading her to hallucinations.

The invitation to a class reunion at first seems like an opportunity for a carefree break. But at the lodge, a surprise awaits her: used dishes are on the dining table, the fireplace is lit, but no one is there. Marla begins to search for the others. And then she hears it again: that whistling cough, out in the frozen darkness...

The No. 1 thriller author in the world presents a new novel where underground fear and suspense never end…

«Statistically, most deaths from natural causes occur between two and five in the morning. There are no studies on the most common time of death as a result of murder.

At least Marla Lindberg was not aware of any such study, although her diary could provide some clues to statisticians. Her soul, for example, had been killed on the twenty-third of April, at eight-thirty in the morning, in the living room of her parental home in Dahlem. She herself would find her final death four years later, on a terribly hot evening in early summer at a former maternity clinic in the Wannsee area of Berlin.

Precisely at 19:51. In a few minutes.

Marla got out of the small, battered car that the courier company had provided her. She had been working temporarily at Carry & Co since she had finished her oral exams for her diploma. Today would have been better if she had taken a day off. The heat hit her like a hot wave from a lit oven. She wiped the sweat from her forehead and looked at her phone again.

Here?

According to Google Maps, she was in front of the right building, no matter how strange it seemed to her.»

  • Spoiler free: Starting from the cover, the book looks like a mailbox as the embossed letters and the silver details that shine in the light make it a very special cover.
The book is like you put "The Experiment," "The Package," and "The Inmate" in a blender and got "The Invitation"—a claustrophobic psychological thriller with a chase and characters who are hiding something until the end.
The only thing that bothered me was that the detail was tiring, even though it was essential to get into the atmosphere of each scene.

  • I love Sebastian Fitzek's books but I wouldn't consider this one my favorite (so far it's Mimic). The whole book was suspenseful and as always I couldn't put it down, and yes, I didn't expect the ending to be like that but it disappointed me a little. However, reading the acknowledgments at the end, everything made sense and I understood the message he wanted to convey.

Ok, it's not bad, but indeed he has written better. The "twist" was, in my opinion, too far-fetched to make much sense.

Classic Fitzek! An easy-to-read book that keeps you in suspense. It has many twists and you can't predict what happens until the end. I found the final revelation a bit excessive and that's why I gave it 4 stars. Other than that, I recommend it.

  • Powerful book with many plot twists and an unexpected ending. I won't spoil anything but it was one of the best I've read. It has quite a few descriptions inside that may not appeal to everyone, but it's a psychological thriller so you can roughly understand what it describes. I would definitely recommend it! It's easy to read, although it confuses you at times due to the change of roles and makes you doubt.

You don't want to put it down from the first page. Throughout, I was trying to find a clue... something to connect!
Tip: read it as quickly as you can and don't leave gaps between readings. The developments are so many that you won't remember what happened.
