The artistic duo Kalos & Klio in this provocative and thematically timely work titled “Violent Silk: Funereal Veils as Objects of Memory,” symbolically refers to the controversial – in today’s era – traditional method of extracting organic silk, which involves the violent process of boiling the silkworm to death, a practice that ensures the extraction of high-quality silk.
This album presents a series of twelve printed works on organic silk in the form of a scarf-veil, which as a whole addresses the phenomenon of violence worldwide both symbolically and metaphorically, depicting human rights violations and brutal acts of death in our modern world, giving it social implications.
It also includes a section from the archive with texts and images, which served as the research material for the artistic duo and describes twelve different examples of violence on a global scale.
The text for the artwork “Violent Silk” is by art historian-museologist Panagiotis Koutsokostas, while the supplementary texts of the album are signed by: Polyxeni Adam-Veleni, Anthi Argiriou, Kalos & Klio, Dimitris Michalaros, Thanasis Moutsopoulos, and Vana Tentokali.
