Description

The Trojans by Euripides was performed in 415 BC, during the height of the Peloponnesian War — shortly after the events in Melos and a few months before the Sicilian expedition. The dramatic events take place in the ruins of Troy immediately after the city's fall to the Greeks. The focus is on the women of Troy (the former queen Hecuba, Cassandra, Andromache with her young son Astyanax, and Helen, who is accused before Menelaus). The play concludes with the departure of the Greeks and the burning of Troy.

This volume includes 23 studies that comprehensively cover all aspects of the tragedy: interpretative issues surrounding the characters and meaning of the work, its literary tradition, its relationship with the other parts of the trilogy, topics such as the function of time and emotions, the consequences of war and the element of mourning, the role of significant characters (Cassandra, Helen), and finally, stage-related issues connected to the performance. It also examines Modern Greek translations, as well as important aspects of the reception of The Trojans related to ancient iconography, modern drama, significant contemporary theatrical performances, cinema, dance, and comics.

The volume is addressed to scholars and educators, students, but also to the general public who wish to gain a deep understanding of The Trojans.
