More than fifteen years after Maastricht and a decade after the adoption of the common currency, the global economic crisis reveals contradictions and existential dilemmas of the unification process.
Problems in the economic-internal and international-external dimension are revealed together and signify the evident European discomfort in the face of rapid developments. In reality, the unification process seems to have stalled, while most or the more "central" members of the European core appear satisfied with the current hermaphroditic status quo, caught between intergovernmental realism and federalist visioning, which even allows for the ad hoc use of Europe.
In the unprecedented context of the collapse of the global financial, production, and trade system, the question arises urgently as to how much longer the European structure will resist the dynamics of "renationalization" that have developed alongside the reformist inertia of recent years.
While new political initiatives are necessary to restart the unification process, equally important is the development of public dialogue truly about Europe and not just about national interests within it, fundamentally changing the logic that has so far governed citizens' views on Europe and its union future.
The volume features the comprehensive, realistic discourse of politicians who have been involved in various ways in the country’s European journey alongside the essayistic and somewhat more analytical and technocratic discourse of academics. Their common denominator is the concern for the future of Europe.
By gathering timely interventions on critical issues, the book constructively contributes to the public dialogue and activates the European reflexes of the country.
