You love, you respect certain things and at some point you start to distinguish them. What is one thing? What is the other? What is religion? How significant is it in a person's life? What does it give him or what does it not give him? I painted the interior of a small church near my house in Sounio. It is located on a small peninsula, where the sea surrounds the space. I believe that if there is a God, He is there. Nature is alive, full of shadows and wild flowers. The winds are around you every day and you feel their presence. The birds fill the sky: seagulls, swallows, sparrows, and finches.
I painted all these inside the chapel.
Personified winds with their names, trees, boats, and birds, they are all there. And in the middle, Christ is the strong presence of a true young man, full of revolutionary flame.
He spoke profoundly and paid a high price for it. In vain we try to put his words into practice. When you stand there, you will feel the contact with God as the winds blow.
