Description

The book Great Moments of Greek Archaeology invites us on a journey through the most significant excavations that have taken place in Greece from the establishment of the modern Greek state until today. Through vivid texts and rich illustrations, the reader follows the chronicle of the revelation of the ancient Greek world and relives those great moments and the emotions they stirred in the entire world.

The significant excavations throughout Greece are many. In the book, we have selected those that most eloquently reflect their era. We start with the initial works conducted on the Acropolis immediately after the Liberation, transforming it from a fortress into a monument. Following are the excavations in Kerameikos, Delos, Delphi, Olympia, and Mycenae.

In the early 20th century, the palace of Knossos and the Neolithic settlements in Dimini and Sesklo are excavated, and shortly thereafter, Poliochni in Lemnos, the Athenian Agora, and the lakeside settlement in Dispilio, Kastoria. The recent period of Greek archaeology is marked by the astounding discoveries at Akrotiri on Santorini and at Vergina.

The royal tombs in Salamis, Cyprus, the ship from Kyrenia, and the excavation of a significant Mycenaean shipwreck at Uluburun in Asia Minor complete the chronicle of great discoveries, enriching our knowledge of the presence of Greeks in the wider area of the eastern Mediterranean.

Particular attention is also given in the book to the adventures of discovering some of the masterpieces of Greek sculpture, such as the Venus of Milos and the Winged Victory of Samothrace, the bronze statues of Piraeus, the Koren Frasikleia with her Kouroi from Merenda, the giant Kouros of Samos, as well as many famous statues that were retrieved from the seabed.
