Description

In this volume, 41 distinguished experts, members of the Greek scientific community of European Studies, honor Panagiotis K. Ioakeimidis, a consistent visionary and activist for a united Europe.

For four decades, Panagiotis K. Ioakeimidis has actively contributed to shaping the national strategy towards European integration and its continuous evolution. Beyond being a policy maker, as a public intellectual he is at the center of the public debate in our country regarding the European Union and Greece's European role, while generations of students have first encountered European integration through his university teaching.

Taking into account Panagiotis K. Ioakeimidis' ongoing engagement with the future of Europe, the thematic focus of the volume centers on the particularly critical phase that European integration is experiencing in recent years. The first section of the book focuses on analyzing the multiple crises currently affecting the European Union (such as Brexit, migration, terrorism, and Euroscepticism).

The next three sections address specific challenges that European integration faces during the current period: institutional (e.g., sovereignty and crisis management, new forms of governance), economic (e.g., European Social Model under threat, worsening regional inequalities), and external (e.g., the European Union's performance on the international stage, bilateral relations, Enlargement and Neighborhood).

Finally, the book examines the issue of the Europeanization of Greece and the evolution of this process during the years of crisis. The book pays tribute to Panagiotis K. Ioakeimidis from his colleagues and simultaneously serves as an essential manual for understanding the multiple dilemmas facing today's European Union, as well as the future prospects of the unification process.
