The wall mosaics of Byzantine art in Thessaloniki are masterpieces of Byzantine artistry with great historical and artistic significance. However, they have not received adequate exposure and attention to become accessible to the general public and scholars. Old photographs are still reproduced and used.
During the Balkan Wars and World War I in the early 20th century, Thessaloniki was at the center of military operations and political developments. At that time, there was intense international scientific interest in the Byzantine monuments of Thessaloniki. After the end of the wars and the liberation of Thessaloniki (1912), the city has not been able to showcase significant publishing ventures for its monuments, apart from the systematic protection of them.
The authors of the book served as the Curators of Byzantine Antiquities in Thessaloniki for forty consecutive years from 1976. Following the earthquakes of 1978 and with the financial support of national and European funds, they directed the stabilization, conservation, and presentation of the mosaics along with their colleagues, archaeologists, architects, and conservators of the Department of Byzantine Antiquities of Thessaloniki.
The research conducted provided new data and more knowledge about the wall mosaics of Thessaloniki, allowing scientists to study and art lovers to enjoy these monumental works of Byzantine art.
With this book, the authors reflect what they gained from their long-standing engagement with the marvelous world of mosaics, and the Kapon Editions ensure the publishing quality with brilliant photographs and original designs that a Greek edition of the wall Byzantine mosaics of Thessaloniki should have. This book fills a significant gap.
