The period of the Metaxas dictatorship is a pivotal moment in the history of modern Greece. It is the culmination of social and political upheaval following World War I, as well as a point of entry into World War II and the subsequent conflicts among Greeks.
The texts in this volume are written by various scholars, from young to experienced, from Greeks to Brits and Australians. All of them have engaged with the Metaxas period following different paths, both within and outside of Greek history.
The authors examine and analyze the issues of Greek political, economic, and social history from the fall of parliamentary governance to the beginnings of the tripartite occupation, while in certain chapters they provide new historical information.
However, our intention was for this collective volume to offer some new pieces of understanding regarding the phenomenon of "Metaxas" and his era.
