The present volume was inspired by the conference organized by the Department of Social Anthropology of Panteion University in March 2017 in honor of Emeritus Professor Dimitra Gefou-Madianou, as a minimal recognition of her invaluable contribution to the establishment and operation of the department and to Greek anthropological matters in general.
The multifaceted contribution of D. Gefou-Madianou consists not only in the institutional consolidation of anthropology in the Greek academic arena but also in her care for the prospects of anthropology in Greece. This anthropology is multifaceted, cosmopolitan, open to critical currents and interdisciplinarity, self-reflective, decolonizing from authoritative practices, and engaged with the pressing issues of the modern world.
This anthropology, which D. Gefou-Madianou consistently serves, recognizes the significant role of ethnographic research in the production of theory, the importance of continuous critical (re)examination of its methodological and conceptual tools, as well as the conditions of its production.
Starting from her rich research and teaching work, this volume attempts to trace the trends that are encountered today, thirty years after the institutionalization of anthropology in the Greek academic space, as well as an exploration of the thematic, methodological, and conceptual challenges that anthropology in Greece and the world is called to confront at the beginning of the 21st century.
