This volume includes studies by well-known and established experts in their fields on the thematic areas of migration, international relations, diaspora, employment, social policy, and the triptych of technology-economy-education.
These thematic areas generally outline the scope of the scientific work of Emeritus Professor Rosetos Fakiyola of the National Technical University of Athens, to whom this collection is dedicated. The goal pursued is twofold: first, to express appreciation to a distinguished intellectual figure; and second, to attempt to continue research in the thematic areas that Rosetos Fakiyola addresses, highlighting certain dimensions of them in light of contemporary developments.
Work as a factor of production and the bearer of it, man, constitute a solid and cohesive thread that connects the four thematic areas of the volume; these refer to fundamental factors of the developmental process and more broadly of the social and political system of each country.
The first thematic section, titled 'Migration', focuses on the new complex and multidimensional issues affecting the social, economic, political, and cultural identity of Greece as a host country for migrants, issues examined from the perspective of external and internal migration policy.
The second theme, titled 'International Relations - Diaspora', refers to the formation of a large stock of Greeks in the diaspora and the multifaceted relationships between the different parts of the diaspora and the metropolis. It also examines the international migration movements of the modern globalization period, which are accompanied by mutations in international relations and regional and international organizations.
The third theme, 'Employment - Social Policy', explores significant redistributive changes in the income shares of social strata and factors of production.
Finally, the fourth theme, titled 'Technology - Economy - Education', refers to the impact of globalization and European economic integration on the national economy and the respective sectors of employment and social policy. Technology is approached from the perspective of its contribution to economic development (Economics of Technology) from ancient times to today, while school and extracurricular education, as well as learning during work (Theory of Endogenous Development), are examined in relation to the importance of human capital in economic development.
