This collective volume focuses on the critical period of democratic transition in Greece, which began with the fall of the military dictatorship in July 1974. The transition from an authoritarian regime to democracy does not always entail the immediate establishment of democracy.
In the case of Greece, however, this transition was achieved in a “velvet” and “rapid” manner, laying the foundations for the Third Greek Republic. The authors of the volume analyze the institutional reforms, the political and social changes, as well as the cultural and intellectual currents that formed the basis for the construction of the Metapolitefsi.
At the same time, they provide their subjective, experiential perspective on the moment of transition and assess the significance of the 1974 rupture for letters, arts, and the broader culture of the Metapolitefsi.
