Description

Description

In the framework of Papadiamandian studies, there has been and continues to be a divergence among scholars regarding the content of the great author's work. A significant portion of them questions its social dimension, considering that Papadiamandis should be approached exclusively ‘theologically’ since, above all, he was a theologian, and we can only speak about him in the language of ‘the soul’, ‘sin’, etc.

On the other hand, many consider Papadiamandis to be a quintessential social writer and speak about him in the language of ‘poverty’, ‘embarkation’, ‘young girls’, ‘dowry’, etc. However, their related references— to varying degrees—pertain to specific issues, highlighting the lack of a systematic and scientifically documented effort to elucidate the social content of Papadiamandis' creation.

This absence contributes to Papadiamandis remaining a ‘misunderstood’ author, who is often viewed independently of his social environment and the significant events that took place in Greece and Europe during the last decades of the 19th century and the first decade of the 20th.

This way, the accusations of ‘withdrawal’, ‘inertia’, etc., that have periodically been attributed to Papadiamandis are inadvertently confirmed. It is indeed a fact that those who insist on Papadiamandis as a social writer operated— to some extent—unstructured, ‘marginalized’, while being accused of distorting, in this way of approaching, the essence of the thought and the words of the creator.
