The 24 texts included in this anthology are both representative and exceptional concerning the entirety of the criticism of detective fiction. From the sayings of the masters of the paradox and literary sacrilege, namely Chesterton, who opens the collection, and Borges, who closes it; from the typological analyses of Todorov and Auden, who affirms that he is addicted to the genre, to Maugham, who prefers it over the so-called 'serious' novel, as well as McLuhan and Wilson, who seem to detest it.
From Chandler, who unequivocally prefers 'hard-boiled' fiction to the classic puzzle narrative, to Orwell, who condemns 'black' detective novels and declares his nostalgia for the gentleman-thieves of the past; from Brecht, who approaches it ironically, to Gorki, who sees in the genre the symbol of the decline of urban literature, to Bloch, who, conversely, perceives in it the preservation of meanings lost in the 'petty-bourgeois' novel.
From Kracauer's sociological view to the poeticity of Benjamin's analyses: the autonomy of a peculiar literary genre is established, which in this present anthology is dissected, analyzed, and inscribed in the theoretical critical discourse.
