For the dominant ideology, the Revolution of 1821 was "liberal," "national," and "democratic." These labels, while not entirely baseless, are insufficient to convey the complexity, contradictions, oppositions, and multiplicity characteristic of 1821, as well as of any genuine revolution.

This collective volume attempts to outline a panoramic picture of the Revolution, aiming to preserve the phenomena in their polysemy and contradictoriness, to show the distinctiveness of the many levels, plans, genealogical lines, the hybrid nature of situations, etc.

It contains 49 of the 74 presentations made at the conference "1821: The Known-Unknown Revolution. A Tradition of Rebellion." Already, the title of the conference indicates the two assumptions upon which the volume is based: a) The Revolution is known-unknown; we know it less well than the French or the Russian Revolution. b) The endeavor of the conference (and the publication of the proceedings) approaches the Revolution from the perspective of a tradition of rebellion that begins long before 1821 and extends to the present day.

The conference and the publication of the proceedings represent an intervention in the public discussion, aimed at contributing to a scientifically grounded critique of the hegemonic ideology, with a view to fostering the social (class) and political consciousness of the agents who are capable of reviving, in contemporary contexts, the ancient tradition of rebellion.
