Architectural modernism, especially the modern movement of the 1920s and 1930s, had as a "genetic" characteristic the dense correspondence between the application and teaching of architecture. Its representatives ensured that their applications were theorized, gave them theoretical content and meaning, and elevated them to theory and teaching.
The aspects of modernism related to architectural education are of multiple interest. Twenty-one architects met to explore the diverse relationships between the theoretical or applied expressions of architectural modernism on one hand and architectural education on the other. How, under what conditions, and with what qualitative characteristics do these bidirectional relationships appear and develop over time?
To what extent and under what conditions does architectural modernism constitute a fertile background for architectural education? Conversely, to what extent and under what conditions is modernism redefined through architectural education?
The modernity of the ideas and principles proposed by architects during the interwar period and the early post-war decades reflected a comprehensive effort to make architecture a carrier of social, constructive, and aesthetic convergence in the perspective of a better environment for the future of humanity.
This effort yielded many significant works that enrich both the international and Greek architectural heritage, but belong to our more recent past and are easily overlooked or misinterpreted - therefore, they require our attention to be recognized and preserved according to their values and unique construction methods.
At the same time, modern architecture still has the dynamism to serve as a great lesson that can contribute to the theory and practice of architectural design, and perhaps to transform, through this contribution, towards better shaping our built future.
