Since the early 1990s, when the southernmost unit of former Yugoslavia declared its independence as 'Republic of Macedonia', all things Macedonian have attracted considerable scholarly attention. As a result, a growing volume of publications enriched the academic discussion of phenomena that have long stirred political controversy.
Part of this output ventured beyond traditional political and diplomatic approaches which emphasized 'security' and state interest. 'Identity' issues, where individuals and human collectivities come to the forefront, received increasing attention.
