Fotis Kontoglou (Ayvalik, Asia Minor, 1896 - Athens 1965), painter, iconographer, and writer, was one of the most significant creators of the 20th century. He sought and highlighted the great tradition of Byzantine art and imposed it in the iconography of churches. From Ayvalik, he initially found himself in Athens and Paris for studies, while after the Great Asia Minor Catastrophe, he was forcibly uprooted from his homeland forever, along with the multitude of refugees of Asia Minor Hellenism.
The publication "Visit" on Fotis Kontoglou includes the presentations of the seminar organized by the Foundation of the Hellenic Parliament regarding the work of the creator on May 4, 2022, which inaugurated the memorial events for the 100th anniversary of the Great Asia Minor Catastrophe. This "visit" examines the dual field of manifestation of Kontoglou's creative talent, both literary and artistic.
On one hand, Lampros Varelas, Iosif Vivilakis, Stavros Zoumboulakis, Kostas Karavidas, and Kostas Spatharakis analyze Kontoglou's literary and translational work as well as aspects of his rich article writing. On the other hand, Michalis Asfentagakis, Evgenios D. Matthaiopoulos, Giannis Bolis, and Irini Orati explore the secular painting of the artist and his modernist approach to Byzantine painting.
The seminar and the publication, as noted in the preface by the scientific editor of the volume, Stavros Zoumboulakis, "aimed precisely to visit, that is, to think and examine the literary and artistic work of Kontoglou, if not with a new perspective, at least by adding something solid to what (few) serious writings have been authored so far about it. [The texts] are equally divided between the writer and the painter. Kontoglou’s work, regardless of the field in which it was expressed, is unified and illuminated better with approaches that do not treat each aspect in isolation."
The volume is dedicated to the memory of Nikos Zias (1939-2020), who was a pioneer in the study of Kontoglou's painting work.
