Description

In this edition, Paschalis M. Kitromilides and Konstantinos Tsoukalas compile forty-six articles by thirty-nine authors, who cover all aspects of the diverse phenomena that make up the Greek Revolution and highlight it as a crucial turning point during the Age of Revolutions (1776-1848).

The Revolution is studied in its successive phases and in its multiple local manifestations throughout the Greek world. The intertwining of the Greek revolutionary movement with corresponding movements in the Romanian territories, where the Greek Revolution initially emerged, as well as in the countries of the South Slavs, is also examined.

The preparation of Greek society for the Revolution is analyzed in three articles that refer to the life of communities, the tradition of uprisings, and forms of resistance to oppression, as well as the secret societies. At the same time, the impacts of the Revolution on the Ottoman power system, which contributed to the initiation of Ottoman reforms, are highlighted.

The religious aspects of the revolutionary upheaval and its consequences for the life of the Church, the crucial work of the National Assemblies during the Struggle and their contribution to the establishment of constitutional governance in the revolutionary country, the finances of the Struggle, initiatives in the field of education, and the triumph of the idea of "homeland" among the circles of the Greek diaspora, a factor that dynamically mobilized these communities in service of the Revolution, are all weighed.

The volume presents a detailed portrait of the Struggle with profiles of its political, military, and ecclesiastical protagonists, as well as diplomats, intellectuals, and women who contributed to it.

Moreover, the ways in which the events of the Revolution are recorded in the Press, in popular culture, in literature, in the visual arts, and in music, the revival of the Enlightenment as a primarily political movement of ideas, and the decisive role of Philhellenism in Europe and America are examined.

Finally, the volume includes an extensive review of historiography and commemorative events at the fifty, hundred, and hundred and fifty year anniversaries of the Revolution.

The edition is accompanied by thirteen maps specially designed by the National Center of Maps and Cartographic Heritage and representative illustrations, which include thirty colored plates.
