Description & Specifications

The planning of the Modern sought to synthesize social and reformist ideas, technological achievements, concerns for public health, and aesthetic inquiries of the modern era. Its impact on the Greek city is not clearly discernible.

This volume explores the boundaries of its presence through 37 architects and urban planners. How are the principles of Modernism expressed during the period of refugee settlement, in post-war reconstruction, or in the period following the major earthquakes? How does the architecture of 1930s schools, and the tourist and labor facilities of the 1960s, influence the Greek urban landscape?

When and how does Modernism appear in large-scale planning in Greece? How does it coexist with the existing Greek city, historical forms and typologies, architectural and urban heritage?

Can modern residential complexes be integrated into the contemporary urban fabric, expressing the spirit of their designers while simultaneously offering solutions to modern problems? Has the Greek city embraced Modernism? Have we ever become modern?

The do.co.mo.mo (international working party for the documentation and conservation of buildings, sites and neighborhoods of the modern movement) is an international non-governmental organization founded in 1990 and currently has 46 national groups – the Greek do.co.mo.mo group was established in 1990.

The "Notebooks of Modernism" is a series of interventions initiated by the Greek do.co.mo.mo group that has focused on modern architecture.
