This volume is a collection of texts written in honor of the historian Yiannis Giannoulopoulos.

Collective works such as the one at hand, products of practical recognition and honoring of an important historian, naturally take the form of a cognitive palimpsest with themes that diffuse, complement each other, but also sometimes diverge.

The patterns, myths, and mechanisms of the emergence of nationalism in Greece, Europe, and the Balkans, the role of religion in shaping 'national identities', and the reflection on the position of History in the public sphere constitute research focal points for both the authors of the volume and the honoree, who either explicitly served these themes or inspired them.

What clearly unites them is the system of cognitive incentives of the methodologically conscientious historian who creatively engages with the challenges of his time.

Especially in this area, Giannoulopoulos's work is truly an inexhaustible source of inspiration.
