This volume is not intended for the broader reading public, who choose a book to enjoy during their leisure time. It is a practical aid for students and teachers who are engaged in the study of acting, identifying the climaxes of roles/characters in each play.
The texts are excerpts from the whole to which they belong and serve as a starting point for the study of each role. And, since most texts are printed in books, the next step for any interested party should be a careful reading of the entire work.
The volume includes excerpts from the works of leading foreign playwrights from the Renaissance to the present day. Criteria for their selection included the recognition of the creator and the distinctive style that makes each work a subject for further study. Each excerpt strives for theatrical and thematic independence as much as possible.
In cases where there has been a compilation, this is indicated with brackets [...] to show the point from which lines have been removed for reasons of theatrical economy. (from the preface by Henri Belier)
