Description

The book Alexander Panagoulis. Defiance in the face of death sheds light on the life and actions of a young man who dared the greatest act of resistance against the dictatorship. The actions of Alexander Panagoulis are the very story of modern Greece, where courage and sacrifice define the course of a people. Panagoulis embodied the anti-dictatorship struggle.

He left forever on May 1, 1976, at the age of thirty-six. He left behind an unquenchable flame, a self-sacrifice that illuminates the path of Freedom and Democracy. His struggle became a symbol of resistance against the dictatorship imposed on Greece and a beacon for peoples elsewhere, demonstrating through his actions that Democracy demands bravery, dedication, and unwavering moral strength.

This commemorative edition is centered around powerful photographs of him inside the Military Courtroom – highlighting the proud and steadfast Greek – and texts by Greek and international historians, poets, musicians, painters, directors, and athletes, all referring to the fighter and his personality. It also includes historical documents and testimonies by Panagoulis himself from the Bougiatou prison.

Fifty years after his death, the initiative of the editors of this volume aims to help younger generations understand exactly who the daring, committed student of the NTUA was – who, in 1968, performed the greatest act of resistance – as well as to encourage reflection among the older ones.
