Description

The volume Introduction to the Poetry of Palamas. A selection of critical texts, like the other volumes in the series with selected critical texts for significant Greek literary figures, serves as a practical introduction to the study of the poetry of Kostis Palamas.

In the extensive introduction by the literary editor, "Palamas and the Criticism of His Poetry," the critical reception of Palamas's poetic work is described and evaluated, tracing its development from the early days to the present. The first of the anthologized texts, "Chronology of Kostis Palamas [1859-1943]" by K. G. Kasini, meets the needs of a general informative guide with biographical information about the man and the author Palamas.

The remaining thirty-one texts are arranged chronologically, from the earliest (1910) to the most recent (2012). Following the anthologized texts are a) a list of their first publications, b) a record of Palamas's bibliography and a selection from his literature, and c) an index of names.

The anthologized critical-literary texts focus on Palamas's poetic work. Consequently, the volume does not include writings on other aspects of Palamas's literary work outside of poetry (criticism, essays, prose, theater, correspondence).

To showcase the variety of interpretations of Palamas's poetry, texts were selected that cover the broad range of subgenres of criticism, both literary and philological (book reviews, short articles, excerpts from broader studies, chapters from monographs).

Thus, the volume includes broader considerations of Palamas's poetry, centered on its aesthetic evaluation, whether positive or negative, as well as purely literary analyses, including approaches focused on specialized aspects.

The succession of disparate and different types of critical texts gives the reader the opportunity to choose those they wish to read more, whether the general, aesthetically oriented considerations of Palamas's poetry or the specialized, literary analyses of specific facets of it.

In general, the texts serve as representative samples of various trends in the criticism of Palamas's poetry over nearly a century. Through the simultaneous reading of these texts, conflicts and clashes of an aesthetic and ideological nature emerge, disputes intrinsic to the evolution of critical thought on poetry throughout the 20th century.
