The work of K. G. Karyotakis was completed in 1928. Now, a century later, we can safely say that it has won the bet against time. It continues to be read, set to music, taught, and creatively influences poets.
Regarding the reception of his poetry, critics' swords cross very early on. Does Karyotakis express the dead ends of his generation or simply his personal melancholy? Does his poetry have aesthetic value or does it move us only because it narrates the drama of a person? Gradually, the value is confirmed and the direction of criticism changes. It focuses on examining the ways in which existential emptiness and the conflicting relationship with a society that imposes alienation intertwine with the anxiety of poetic expression.
The criterion for the selection of texts anthologized in this volume was their ability to be integrated into an open conversation. From earlier studies, those that can be considered, with the advantage of a retrospective view, landmarks in the reception of Karyotakis' work are selected; those that have served as reference points or raised issues that were systematically explored later. Their juxtaposition with newer studies that illuminate Karyotakis' poetry from different angles highlights a field of dialogue that is constantly refeeding itself. In the Introduction, an attempt is made to map this dialogue surrounding a poetic work that has proven to be exceptionally and persistently impactful.
